SHIFNAL TOWN 2 COALVILLE TOWN 1
Polymac Services Midland Football Alliance League Cup Final
(Played at The Banks’s Stadium, Walsall)
Tuesday 6 May 2008
A tremendous team effort saw Shifnal return to Shropshire with the league cup trophy, beating a Coalville side which probably created the better chances, but failed to put them away. Most of the early goalmouth action took place at the Shifnal end, with visiting skipper Ashley Brown causing all sorts of problems with his long throws. Shifnal only half-cleared one of these throws after only 2 minutes, and were thankful to see Alvin Jarvis’ 20-yard screamer pass the wrong side of the upright. Michael Swan spurned another chance shortly afterwards, heading straight at Tim Beech when a free kick found him unmarked. Beech did well to turn Jarvis’ half-hit shot round for a corner after 15 minutes from another long throw, then he came to the Shropshire side’s rescue again 3 minutes later to deny Swan with a superb save after Ben Jevons had played a weak back-pass. Shifnal started to come into the game midway through the first half, and Ben Porter had their first effort on goal on 24 minutes, heading too close to Danny Handley from Tim Jackson’s free kick. On the half-hour, Coalville only half-cleared a corner, and Adam Cain’s volley from 20 yards flew just past the post. Both sides had half-chances before the interval, but there was no score when the half-time whistle blew.
